Updating Your Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

If your kitchen cabinets are in good condition, but the knobs and pulls on your doors and drawers are either outdated, or you just don’t like them anymore you can easily replace the cabinet hardware for a fresh look. Cabinet hardware includes things like the cabinet knobs, drawer pulls, cabinet backplates and hinges.

Knobs And Pulls

In most cases changing the cabinet knobs and drawer handles should be a relatively easy job. The hardest part may be choosing the ones you want from the thousands you can find available at hardware stores and online. If you have something very specific in mind keep searching, you’ll likely find what you want. Manufacturers have become quite creative with their knob designs. You can find them in a variety of materials from various metals to wood, glass, ceramic and even polyester and almost any shape you can imagine.

Often times you can use the existing holes in the cabinet when replacing cabinet knobs and drawer pulls. Although the drawer pulls may be a little more difficult since they require two holes. If the pulls or handles you chose don’t fit the existing holes you can use wood putty or a cabinet backplates to cover the old holes.

Cabinet Backplates

Cabinet backplates fit between the front of the cabinet door and the cabinet knob. They can be used just for looks or to cover holes from previous knobs or handles. They are also used to protect the cabinet from dirt, grime and scratches.

If the cabinet knobs and handles you choose don’t have a matching backplate you can simply look for one that is a matching material, finish and style of your knobs and pulls. If you are buying from a hardware store this will be easy to do. If you are ordering online this should be pretty easy too as you can buy the backplates from the same manufacturer from which you are buying the knobs. Just make sure to get the exact same finish so they blend together well. Most pictures online are pretty clear so you should be able to see how well the knobs and backplates go together.

Hinges

If your hinges are in good working condition you may want to leave them. Most hinges are placed on the inside of the cabinets so they are not easily seen and won’t detract from the look of your kitchen cabinets. If they are dirty you may simply want to take them off, clean them then reinstall them. This will both make them look and work better.

Choosing Kitchen Cabinet Hardware for Your Home

The kitchen is one of those places in the home that you spend a lot of time in. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to change up the look like other rooms in the home. While you can easily rearrange the furniture in the living room in an afternoon, changing the look of your kitchen usually requires a major rip and tear project.

But kitchen cabinet hardware offers a far easier and much less expensive way to give your kitchen an entirely new look. You’d be surprised how changing the knobs, pulls, drawer slides and even the hinges can offer a fresh update without spending tons of money.

While replacing your existing kitchen cabinet hardware is pretty straightforward, it’s not a haphazard project. Just like choosing a new coffee table or sofa, you need to give some thought about the style, color, features and even the ergonomics of your kitchen cabinet hardware. If you don’t, you could find that your new kitchen look isn’t as dreamy as you had hoped.

The good news is that redoing the kitchen with new kitchen cabinet hardware is not an expensive proposition. If you just replace the knobs and pulls alone, you may be in it for anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars, depending on the kind of hardware you choose.

As with anything, there are lots of different price points. Very simple knobs can run you under a buck each. For a more personalized or customized look, cabinet kitchen hardware can cost more. As they say, the sky is the limit, especially if you want something that is not your usual run-of-the-mill hardware.

That said, it is still far cheaper to replace the kitchen cabinet hardware than tearing out all your cabinets and counters and starting from scratch. Best of all, you can do it over a weekend. Swapping out existing knobs and pulls with the same type of hardware will only take you an hour or two. If you decide to make a more drastic switch, such as changing from pulls to knobs or vice versa, you will need to do a little more work, since you may have to drill new holes and even patch the old ones. For example, if your existing kitchen cabinet hardware has a single knob, you may need to fill that hole if you are going to put in a pull, which has two connect points. However, you may be able to use a back plate instead, covering up the old hole with the plate and not having to do any filling or cosmetic work.

When shopping for new kitchen cabinet hardware, you want to make sure you take an inventory of all the existing hardware you have – the number of pulls, back plates, knobs, etc. that you will need. This will help you in the budgeting stage. Then you want to decide on the style and finish. A good way to do this is to do some initial shopping, selecting a few styles or finishes that you like and installing them on a few of your cabinets. Live with them for a while and see which one you like best. Then make the rest of your purchases once you’ve settled on your favorite look for your kitchen cabinet hardware.

If you don’t find the styles and finishes you’re looking for where you live, try shopping online. Online retailers have a larger selection of hardware and often stock more unusual styles, since they can source from smaller or boutique designers and manufacturers that the larger home improvement stores can’t afford to stock. This also allows you to easily a find a couple different ones you like, have them delivered to your home, install them and settle on the ones you actually want before placing your final order.

Kitchen Cabinet Hardware For a Great Kitchen Makeover

One of the aspects of a kitchen remodeling job is changing the cabinet or cupboard hardware. This alone will bring your cooking area to a new and fancy layout that everyone will love.

In case you are short of cash, you need to watch how much you spend on replacing your cabinet hardware with new pieces. If you go for fancy stuff, it will cost you more than something simpler. Also depending on the kitchen style you might buy something that is practically too much, an overkill.

For a simple, basic style kitchen, you might be able to get away with enhancing the doors and cupboards with some new pulls, hinges and knobs. There are many beautiful pieces that can match up pretty much any room style and they greatly enhance the look of the place. But before you start you need to decide how much money you have to spend on this endeavor and what style of cooking place you actually have.

Since you are remodeling anyway, you could also do a few additional things such as organize your storage so you can put more things away. Having everything on your counter might make the room feel crammed and small. By putting away many knick-knacks and appliances you will basically bring a fresh breeze to the place and make it look bigger as well. Before going off and buying your cabinet hardware, check out what is all available in the stores.

See what will match mostly with your place and is still within your budget range. See what style of cabinets you have and what will go best with it. Stainless steel cabinets will need different hardware pieces than something made of wood, plastic or other material. If you have painted ones, you might want to take a look at the unfinished knobs made of wood. The unfinished wood material is quite cheap and many can easily afford them while at the same time they greatly enhance the ambient of any place. It really all depends on what you have at home and what your needs are.

When you’ve purchased your hardware, you can do a few things to give your room a nice makeover. First of all, as I mentioned before, make sure to declutter your counter. Put away anything that you don’t need on a regular basis. If you have a pantry storage room, put all your appliances, jars, jams and whatnot in there. Make the place airy, more light and open. Then clean all the drawers, cabinets, counters, walls and then finally start replacing the various hardware pieces such as knobs, hinges, pulls and whatever else you bought from the store. Just by doing these few things, you will have given the area a nice makeover without spending too much money.

Cabinet Hardware for a New Home

Purchasing a new home is a pretty exciting event in one’s life, especially when it offers so many possibilities for decorating and making it uniquely your own.

For many homeowners, the last thought on their mind is cabinet hardware for a new home. Rather than choose new pulls, handles, back plates and hinges, they simply make due with whatever the builder or previous owner decided to install. But cabinet hardware for a new home can really transform your home’s kitchen and bathrooms for very little money, giving you a look that reflects your personality and tastes, not the contractor or previous homeowner.

Cabinet hardware for a new home isn’t expensive either. It’s actually one of the most inexpensive updates you can do to the home. Knobs, handles, pulls, back plates and hinges range in price from under a dollar to a couple dollars each and are easy to swap out. All you need is a screwdriver and a little elbow grease.

Like a new coat of paint, cabinet hardware for a new home can give a kitchen or bathroom an entirely new look. And thanks to the Internet, it’s easier than ever to shop in the comfort of your own home and select cabinet hardware for a new home that is perfect for your new abode.

As you shop, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind.

Style. First, there are endless styles out on the market today, from traditional and country to rustic, contemporary and even modern. While you have a lot of latitude within any style and plenty of choices, you do want to stay with the style of your cabinetry. In other words, if you have a country kitchen you want to stick with country cabinet hardware for a new home.

Finish. Once you have a style in mind, you want to decide on the finish. This is where you can exercise a lot of creative control over the look of the room. Hardware comes in a range of finishes, from antique copper and brass to brushed steel, aluminum, ceramic, wood – the list goes on. Again, the finish is really a matter of personal preference. Just be sure that the finish you select is available for all the pieces of hardware you need. You don’t want to commit to purchasing dozens of antique copper knobs, pulls and back plates only to find that the hinges only come in chrome.

Size/Scale. As you shop, remember that cabinet hardware for a new home comes in a wide variety of sizes. Scale is important. You don’t want to get hardware that looks too big or too small on the cabinetry. Also, you want to make sure that each pull, knob or handle fits your hands comfortably. A smart shopping tip is to purchase a couple different styles, install them and then decide on the cabinet hardware for a new home that fits you best and is easy to use on a daily basis.

Screws/Bolts. All cabinet hardware is not created equally, particularly when it comes to knobs, pulls and handles. Because drawers have different thicknesses, you need to make sure that you order cabinet hardware for a new home that has the same matching lengths of screws and bolts. Otherwise, you may not be able to tighten the hardware fully. The easiest way to ensure a perfect match is to remove an existing piece of hardware and measure the length of the screw or bolt. When you order or purchase new hardware, simply double check the measurements. If you’re adding a back plate, factor the additional depth in to the measurement of the bolt. If you’re still not confident, install one sample before placing a full order.
